Agriculture phenomenon

Stimulated by the interest of agribusinessby technology, the use of this equipment is being increased in the field, increasing the participation of the area in manufacturers’ sales

The growing mechanization of Brazilian agriculture is attractingto the field more and more machines that are typical of construction worksites. This trend is also increased by the force of farming, which is feeling more lightly the crisis that hits other areas of the economy. Figures show that trend. In 2015 agribusiness GDP reached R$ 1.267 trillion (or 21.46 percent of the total), an increase of 1.8 percent compared to 2014. The national GDP decreased 3.8 percent in the same period.

In the case of manufacturers, however, just a few talk about the numbers of their growth. “By strategic reasons, we decided not to disclose data about our share or about the representativeness of each area”, sidesteps Roberto Marques, sales director of the Forest and Construction Division from John Deere. “What we may say is that since our operations with the Yellow Line started, we were received quite well by agriculture producers. After all, we have a long history of partnership with country’s agriculture.”

For Caterpillar, agribusiness was always a fundamental area, not only in the market of motor graders but also in that of wheel loaders, excavators, tractors and backhoes. Although the company does not disclose numbers of sales by product line, according to its Press Office the influence of the agribusiness in its total sales practically tripled with construction slowdown, “transforming it inan area of vital importance for the business”.

ADVANCEMENT

Case CE is an exception in disclosing numbers. According to Gleidson Gonzaga, product marketing expert of the company, sales of motor graders foragriculture doubled in last six years. “During this period, the commercialization of all models for agriculture was increased”, informs him. “This increased the participation of that area from 2 to 18 percent of total sales.”

According toVladimir Machado Filho, sales and application engineer from Komatsu, the increase in the use of construction machines in the agribusiness is due to the growing need of achieving flexibility in land preparation, what involves the opening and maintenance of access ways. “With farming mechanization, the need of maintenance and easy access to dispose production is becominghigher”, explains him. “It is necessary to be quick in the development of these services and motor graders make this possible.”

Caterpillar adds another reason for this trend. It is based on the versatility of the equipment which—according to the company—is ideal for construction and maintenance not only of access ways but also of contour-lines, quite used in planting. The interest of agriculture market by technology also contributes to this situation. According to the company, this interest and the force of the agribusiness “are generating excellent sales for those who work in this market”.

Motor graders are also quite used to prepare the terrain for seeding. The producer realized the gains in productivity that come from the crop in areas that were wellleveled before planting. “An example is the sugar cane culture”, says Gonzaga, from Case. “The more the terrain is regular, the better the result will be. The lowest partof the cane  has the highest concentration of sucrose and the cut near the soil is possible only when the area is well leveled.”
